On Demand Webinar: Teaching the Transition from Recording Homework to Learning Scheduling Skills

The Intention to Action Series of Webinars

When coaching students to develop stronger executive function skills, we help them to go from intention to action by teaching them to perform a mental dress rehearsal or to do a "dry run" of the task in their mind before they begin to carry out the plan. In other words, we teach them to be a 'Mind MIME' and act out in their mind the intended action.

We ask students to imagine themselves across space and time when planning to accomplish a task in a future setting. In fact, 90% of the time, task planning happens in a different space from where we all execute plans! This imagery is a mental anchor that allows the student to better resist distractions and maintain a pace to reach a goal. When forethought guides an individual's actions, they can carry out tasks more successfully.

The Intention to Action Series: Scheduling

Teaching the Transition from Recording Homework/Tasks to Learning the Actual Skill of Planning

Webinar description: In Part 1 of our multiple part “Intention to Action” series, we will identify why students struggle to create schedules for effective time management. You may have observed that although some students record assignments in an agenda book, it may not translate to their independently knowing when and where they complete assignments. Or, maybe you have heard students say, “I don’t need to use a schedule book. Everything is posted online!” or “A schedule book? I don’t like them. What if the schedule changes?”

How can you handle these challenges and objections? How do students go from understanding an hour of time to scheduling daily, weekly and monthly tasks? How do we help students to own the process of scheduling and learn to see the benefit of, and actually consistently use, a schedule book? While digital calendars are great, their successful use requires the cognitive underpinnings of knowing the process of how to schedule one’s time. How can we teach these cognitive executive function processes to students so they can successfully transition to using digital calendars?   Scheduling time fuels productivity and promotes the homework/life/downtime balance students need.   While the benefits of scheduling time are clear, exactly how to teach students to do this has presented parents and educators with a challenge.

In this On Demand webinar we will break down the developmental shifts in how students learn to be schedulers and learn how to use this progression to our advantage to develop student’s scheduling skills. Learn practical, field tested strategies and advice that can be implemented at each developmental stage for students to build independent planning skills and be prepared for managing their own time and schedule when they transition to college. Whether you are a teacher, clinician, parent or administrator this webinar is for you! We will address the underlying core skills of scheduling from early elementary school through college.

Join Kristen and Sarah as we take a closer look at how students learn to schedule their time and not merely record their homework/to-do tasks.
